Athens During World War II

Athens was occupied by the Germans during World War II and experienced terrible privations during the later years of the war. The Great Famine was heavy in the city. Several resistance organizations were created. After the liberation, in 1944, there was heavy fighting in the city between the communist forces and the government forces backed by the British.
